What is Zoopharmacognosy?
The science of animal self-medication or Botanical Self Selection is called zoopharmacognosy, derived from the greek roots zoo (“animal”), pharma (“drug”), and gnosy (“knowing”).
Animals have an innate ability to self-medicate by using plants, clay and minerals. In the wild they will forage for them, rub themselves against, chew roots and barks or eat grasses and herb but as our pets usually don’t have access to these remedies we can help by providing them with herbs, essential oils, hydrosols and other natural remedies.
By offering your animals the opportunity and freedom to choose for themselves what they need to make them feel better, we are giving a voice and in return this can strengthen your relationship with them.
Botanical Self Healing can help to achieve an all round wellness for your animal not only physical discomfort but also effecting emotions and behaviour.
What happens in a session?
All sessions are individual, just as our animals are with their own needs, therefore a home visit can last between 1 and 2 hours.
I will bring my botanical kit full of essential oils, aromatic waters, herbs and nutrients for your animals to choose from. Once they are presented with several herbal remedies they usually show interest in the ones they require.
They will choose to either inhale, ingest or have them applied topically. The choice is completely theirs and no remedy will ever be forced on them.
I am currently looking for participants in my canine case studies. If you are interested in receiving a free consultation and in some cases a follow up visit, please get in touch for more information.
Reiki is not a replacement for veterinary medicine/ treatments but supports traditional veterinary care and works well alone or with other complementary therapies. If your animal has any symptoms of illness you should call your vet. The law currently states that before your pet receives a Reiki treatment you must gain veterinary consent.
